lumier brothers, ‘surpentine danse’ (1899)
at the end of the 19th century, modern dance pioneer, loie fuller, traveled around with the edison art company where they used edison’s (then) new incandescent bulbs. a team of lighting and stage engineers projected the multi-colored lights onto her costume. the lumier brothers had each frame hand painted to achieve the same effect as the live performance.
